Jonathan Franzen on Christopher Romer's Art

Jonathan Franzen took a few minutes out to talk about Christopher Romer's art. We created this web spot to highlight not only Christopher's work, but how others viewed that work.

San Francisco based sculptor Chris Romer was trained in Chicago, New York and England, where he grew up. He works in wood, creating large and small abstract pieces that remind you of the animals, birds, insects and fish he is so found of. He develops what he calls eco-systems for the viewers to become part of as they walk in and among his works. The gorgeous colors and shapes make you want to reach out and touch them.

We filmed Chris in his studio over a period of a year, around several shows and the arrival of a new baby daughter. Always interested in trying new techniques, he makes visual reference again and again to American vernacular sculpture such as his collection of ice fishing decoys, naïve carvings of all kinds and furniture such Windsor chairs. We look forward to following the progress of this easy going, dedicated and passionate sculptor.
